A golf cart gives you a flexible way to reach those island outings from your vacation rental. The trick is to group nearby stops, park legally and enjoy the area on foot. You can cover less ground and still come home feeling as though you've discovered somewhere new.

Here are five ideas for a first visit to Anna Maria Island. Treat them as destinations to plan around, not a turn-by-turn driving route: your specific cart, current restrictions and rental agreement determine which roads you can use.

1. Browse Pine Avenue in the city of Anna Maria

Pine Avenue is a good place to begin if you'd like to get beyond the beach without committing to a full-day activity. Browse the shops, pause for something to eat and give yourself time to wander rather than arriving with a long list of errands.

This is on the north end of the island, in the city of Anna Maria. The local tourism listing will help you locate it, while the historical society describes the surrounding area as a walkable mix of shops and restaurants.

Make it an easy outing: Have breakfast before or after browsing, and choose a parking space whose posted conditions cover your visit. If your rental is already nearby, walking may be the simplest option; a cart is more useful when you're coming from farther away.

Save purchases for the end so you aren't carrying bags throughout the visit. There is no need to move the cart from storefront to storefront.

2. Add the historical park and Old City Jail

At 402 Pine Avenue, the Anna Maria Island Historical Society's site brings several stops together: the museum, Old City Jail, Belle Haven Cottage and Mangrove Walk. It's an easy addition to the Pine Avenue outing, especially for a family that wants a little local history between beach days.

The historical society's visitor page lists free museum admission, with donations welcome, and scavenger hunts available from the gift shop. You can give children something to look for rather than asking them to quietly follow adults through every display.

Check before you go: The society's current About page lists a September museum closure and Sunday/Monday closures. Confirm hours for your dates, particularly around the change into October. Don't build your arrival-day plan around an assumed opening time.

Leave the cart in permitted parking and explore the site on foot. Combining the historical park with Pine Avenue also means you can spend more time looking around and less time finding another space.

3. Make Manatee Public Beach your straightforward beach day

If you're new to the island, a beach with useful facilities can make the first outing easier. Manatee Public Beach, in Holmes Beach, has restrooms, showers, concessions and picnic areas, according to Manatee County.

That gives you some flexibility: enjoy the sand, rinse off and decide whether to buy food or head back to the house. You don't have to pack for every possible need just to spend part of the day at the beach.

Pack for the ride you have: Check how chairs, towels and a small cooler can be secured in the cart without interfering with seats or restraints. If the equipment won't fit, reduce the load or make a different transportation plan.

A cart may be easier to maneuver than your larger vehicle, but it still needs an authorized parking space. The county prohibits vehicles on the beach and pedestrian paths, so expect to carry your things from parking to the sand.

Bring a manageable picnic and make room for an unhurried shoreline walk. This is an alternative to filling the afternoon with several different destinations, especially when your group wants a break from shopping or scheduled activities.

Plan the finish: Check beach conditions and posted closing times before settling in. The county lists general Coquina Beach hours as sunrise to sunset, unless otherwise posted or permitted. Don't assume you can leave the cart there late into the evening while heading elsewhere.

Choose two outings, then leave the rest for another day

For a north-end morning, combine Pine Avenue with the historical park when it's open. For a southern outing, choose either a longer Coquina beach visit or Bridge Street browsing and mini golf.
